SRINAGAR, Aug 25: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) called off demolition drive after its official were attacked in the Koolipora locality of Khanyar in the old city area of Srinagar today.
Some of the SMC officials sustained minor injuries in the incident and police had to provide security cover to them. The SMC had to call off operation after defacing the front portion of the illegal structures. They could not raze the structures to the ground due to the resentment shown by the locals.
This morning a team of SMC demolition squad after observing that illegal constructions have come up in the Koolipora-Khanyar area started a demolition drive in the area.
However, a group of people especially youth objected to the demolition drive and said that the structures were legal with all the necessary permission. On this the SMC demolition squad members asked them to stay away and not to interfere in the demolition drive.
On this, people started pelting stones on the SMC demolition squad. The situation turned violent in the area and the news about the incident spread like a wild-fire to the nearby areas. Some of the SMC workers sustained minor injuries in the incident and the situation turned volatile in the area.
Police personnel of police station Khanyar provided security cover to the demolition squad members. The situation in the area turned normal after the intervention of the police.
