SRINAGAR, Nov 1: Enforcement squad of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today launched an extensive anti-encroachment drive in several areas.
A statement issued by SMC said that the drive was launched in Jahangir Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Maharaja Bazar, Goni Khan, Lal Ded road, Jawahar Nagar, Dalgate, Batamaloo, Hyderpora, Residency road, Lal Chowk and other areas of the city.
During the drive, various footpath encroachments and street vendors were cleared and the encroachers were warned to vacate from the encroached spaces which causes inconvenience to the pedestrians and hinders traffic movement, the statement said.
At least three hundred vends/carts/kiosks were seized during the drive, the SMC said. “We have already started full time vigilance on encroachments particular in busy market areas. A constant patrolling from morning till evenings is being kept on these encroachments to curb down the menace,” said Commissioner SMC Riyaz Ahmed Wani.
The drive will rigorously continue till all the street vendors and encroachments are removed, he said. The Commissioner said their first step towards ending this growing menace is to create awareness and do announcements so that these encroachers disperse off themselves without the interference of enforcement authorities.
“But if these defaulters continue to encroach upon the footpaths and other road side space their goods/ articles will be seized on spot without serving further notice to them that would be followed by an immediate action against them under law,” the SMC Commissioner added.
