We are living in an age of digitization. Information technology has changed the world in real sense. Anybody can feel the change taking place day in and day out. In this social transformation, human beings of coming centuries are under manufacture. We have traveled a long long distance from traditional and classical educational methodology and have entered the digital era in which speed and suspense are the glaring and overwhelming traits. Education is the most important area in which digital technology will have to be inducted and given a very prominent place. If we want that our young generation of students should make their mark in various branches of science and technology, if we want that India of this century should be technology savvy, we must take requisite steps now and immediately.
The good news is that the Union Government is fully seized of this imperative and is determined to respond to it. With the technical support of National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), a total 220 Government schools across Jammu and Kashmir are going to have Computer Aided Learning (CAL) centers with Smart Class learning facility for the students. We learn that the Union Government has cleared Rs 1265 lakh for the first phase of this project for the year 2015-16 under SSA. A total 220 Government schools, maximum 10 in each district including Leh and Kargil, will be provided Smart class rooms with large interactive board, with LCD projector and visual presenter. Not only this, a Computer Lab is also being set in each school, having power back up of 3 KVA generator for uninterrupted power supply and voltage stabilizers besides at least three KVA UPS systems (online), with one hour back up. It means facilitating selected institution to connect with other parts of the country and visualize seminars and other education related programmes. This system will open a new window of knowledge for the students, especially from the remote and far-flung areas of the State like Kargil, Kupwara, Poonch, Kishtwar and Nobra area of Ladakh. It is a commendable step and we are told that it will be made operational within three months. However, keeping in mind the utility of this important step, it would be in fitness of things if more and more schools of the State are brought within the ambit of these facilities.
