KATHUA, Mar 21: “Management of Scary Effect of Dry Spell”, an awareness programme under NICRA-AICRPAM Project by Agrometeorology Section of SKUAST- Jammu, was organized at village Sherpur in Hiranagar of district Kathua, here today.
The main objective of the programme, organized under the guidance of Dr J P Sharma, Director Research, SKUAST-J, was to train farmers to manage weather related uncertainties, especially effect of dry spell during kharif and rabi season in day to day agricultural activities.
Dr Mahender Singh, Incharge, Agrometeorlogy & PI NICRA-AICRPAM, emphasized the use of weather and climate based agro-advisories in day to day agriculture activities and stressed upon the farmers to make more and more utilization of services rendered by Agrometerology Section of SKUAST – Jammu.
Dr Amrish Vaid, Sr Scientist & Head, KVK Kathua, gave a detailed information on ongoing activities of KVK Kathua for the benefits of farmers in the region. He stressed farming community to adopt improved/modern technologies like agro advisory services and mechanized/customized farming systems, etc to manage dry spell.
Dr A P Singh emphasized on weather based contingent crop planning and conservation of agriculture to mitigate the effect of dry spell. Dr B R Bazaya explained farmers about weed management during dry spell in rabi and kharif crops. Dr. Anil Bhushan discussed new technologies of vegetable cultivation under changing climate scenario while Dr V B Singh emphasized on the role of weather factors on disease development and their management in horticultural crops.
Dr. Uma Shankar stressed upon management of various insect pests in cereals and vegetable crops. Dr Rohit Sharma gave detailed information on importance of agromet advisory services. He said that more than 12000 farmers have been linked with crop and weather based SMS service and are getting regular weather updates and forecasts that will help them in performing agricultural operations in Jammu region.
Dr Charu Sharma presented the vote of thanks and motivated the farmers to take maximum advantage from this awareness programme as well as the services provided by SKUAST – Jammu. She answered the queries of farmers very patiently.
