SRINAGAR, Mar 12: World Kidney Day was commemorated today at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) to build awareness about kidney diseases and their causes.
The Department of Nephrology celebrated the day in SKIMS auditorium wherein experts deliberated lecturers on various topics pertaining to kidney health and the management of kidney diseases during the event. This year’s theme for World Kidney Day was “Kidney Health for everyone everywhere-From Prevention to Detection and Equitable Access to Care”.
The experts informed that due to increased life expectancy and an epidemic of diabetes and hypertension world-wide, kidney diseases have increased manifold throughout the world including Kashmir, “poverty, gender discrimination, lack of education and occupational hazards are widespread and are major challenges to kidney health delivery,” experts said.
Prof. Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, HOD Nephrology, Dr. Muzzafar Maqsood Wani, Professor Department of Nephrology and Dr. Ajaz Arshad in their deliberations called for universal health coverage for prevention, detection of kidney disease, which they said can be achieved by ensuring universal, sustainable and equitable access to healthcare of high quality and improving equity in health across socioeconomic groups.
Director SKIMS/EOSG, Dr. A.G. Ahangar appreciated the Department of Nephrology for providing all necessary services required in kidney ailments and hailed contributions of former HODs also in making the Department of Nephrology, SKIMS an advance centre for treatment of kidney diseases.
Meanwhile, Dean of Medical faculty, Dr. O. J. Shah highlighted academic advancement of the Department including starting of D.M. courses from the current academic calendar.
