Srinagar, Mar 30: As People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) are days away to form coalition Government in State, the Sikh community of the region has sought representation in the would-be council of ministers.
All District Gurdwara Prabandhak Committees (GPCs) – an apex Sikh body of the State – today said it expects that PDP and BJP would give at least one representation in Cabinet to Sikh community. “We have great hope that upcoming coalition Government would not let us down while framing new Cabinet,” Harjit Singh, one of the members of GPC, told reporters here.
He said the Sikhs of Jammu and Kashmir voted in last Assembly polls because they are facing multiple issues and those issues can be solved only if a Sikh representative having knowledge of their religion is inducted into the cabinet. “He should be knowledgeable especially about Gurdwara Act,” said Harjit Singh.
As of now, there is no Sikh representative in Legislative Assembly but one Sikh member is in Legislative Council. The GPC member also sought an economic package, minority status, reservation in education sector and jobs for Sikh community. “We hope if representation is given to our community then we will not be forced to leave Valley for livelihood and survival,” Harjit Singh added.
