JAMMU, Sept 3: Various Sikh Organizations cautioned the Government and other political parties that community might consider complete boycott of forthcoming Assembly elections if special measures are not taken for the permanent settlement of refugees and reservation on the analogy of other disadvantaged sections of society.
Addressing a press conference, general secretary, J&K Sikh United Front Avtar Singh Khalsa informed that this decision was taken in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Mahant Manjit Singh, Head, Shiromani Dera Nangali Sahib, Poonch at Digiana Ashram.
He said that during the meeting, the participants called upon coalition Government to take up these issues in tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting so that the losing confidence of the Sikh community is restored. The speakers asserted that the other political parties should also make their policies towards these issues of Sikh community at the earliest, Khalsa stated.
He added that during the meeting, prominent members of the Sikh community presented their views and urged Mahant Manjit Singh to declare a policy which shall be abiding on the community members.
After listening to the views of all the participants Mahant Manjit Singh advised the community members for not extending their support to any political party unless there is clear cut policy on important demands of the Sikhs, he said.
“Mahant Manjit Singh said that the Government should immediately come out with a clear policy on the issues of resettlement of refugees and reservation to the Sikh community”, Khalsa informed.
During the meeting, Sudarshan Wazir, president of the front and ex-president, State Gurudwara Prabandhak Board said that the Sikh community is feeling deeply let down over the indifference of all political parties towards the community’s most serious issues. Wazir added that the indifference of the political parties particularly present coalition Government shall force the Sikh community to boycott forthcoming Assembly elections.
The press conference was attended by representatives of various Sikh organizations including Bhai Kanahia Nishkam Seva Society, All India Sikh Student Federation, Sikh Naujawan Sabha, Sikh Welfare Society, Gurmat Vichar Manch, Ex-DGPC members etc.
