JAMMU, June 25: Various Sikh organisations held a strong protest and blocked Jammu-Pathankote National Highway near Digiana Ashram here today.
The members of various Sikh bodies of the State including Shiromani Akali Dal, Sikh United Front, Bhai Kanhiya Nishkam Sewa Society, AISSF, Sikh Welfare Society, Sikh Naujwan, Sabha, Members of DGPC Jammu and a large number of Sikh community members assembled at National Highway near Digiana Ashram, Jammu  and started protest. They burnt tyres and blocked the busy highway.
They were shouting slogans against J&K Government and demanding   implementation of Punjabi language as compulsory subject. Various  speakers stressed upon the Government to include Punjabi as a compulsory language in the State at all levels. The highway was blocked for about half an hour. Later, a police party led by DSP and assisted by SHO arrived there and it cleared the road.
While addressing the people and the media,  Dayal Singh Wazir, president Shiromani Akali Dal J&K said that the history of Sikhs is the history of sacrifice which the Sikhs have contributed for the society.
He said the community will not tolerate injustice. He  further condemned the State Government for its step motherly treatment to the Punjabi language while making other regional languages compulsory. All the participants were demanding immediate implementation of Punjabi language as a compulsory subject and warned of an agitation if the demand not met with.
Others who participated in the protest programme  including Surinder Singh Kala, Ramneek Singh Bijral,  Darbinder Singh, Raja Singh, Fateh Singh,  Mohinder Singh,  Paramjeet Singh, Gajan Singh,  Inderpal Singh, Kulwant Singh, Harpreet Singh,  Surjeet Singh, Kuldeep Singh Malik,  Kapoor Singh DuttaS. Rajinder Singh, Harpal Singh Prince,  Balbir Singh and Tejpal Singh.
