Srinagar, Nov 25: All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee, Kashmir, said that mere words from the State Government on granting minority status would not suffice untill the practical steps were not taken.
In a statement, APSCC Chairman, Jagmohan Singh Raina said that APSCC has been persuading the State Government to grant minority status to the Sikhs in State for the past so many years, but of no use.
Rana said despite official correspondence from Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and President, Pranab Mukherjee to Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister for extending the National Minorities Act to Sikhs in State there has been no headway in this matter.
He said Chairman, National Minority Commission, Wajahat Habibullah personally met the Chief Minister in this regard, but still then there is no progress.
The chairman warned that Sikhs would boycott National Conference and Congress candidates in next Assembly elections in case the present dispensation fails to give minority status to Sikhs in State.
He said that APSCC has already started a campaign to make the members of community aware about the promises that were never kept by the present Coalition Government.
