Shutdown in South Kashmir

Excelsior Correspondent
Srinagar, Feb 23: A shutdown was observed in several parts of South Kashmir against the killing of three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants during which people staged violent protests at multiple places and offered funeral-in-absentia for the slain trio.
All the shops and commercial establishments were closed in Pampore, Tral, Awantipora, Pulwama and Pakharpora areas of South Kashmir. Three Pakistani LeT militants were gunned down by security forces after 48-hour long gunbattle inside Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) complex.
Police sources said that people held funeral-in-absentia for these militants at Tral, Awantipora, Pulwama and Pampore and also staged protests. There were stone-throwing clashes between youths and Government forces at several places in South Kashmir, resulting in injuries to three protesters.
Authorities had deployed contingents of police and Paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel at sensitive places of south Kashmir, particularly in Pampore and its adjoining areas, to prevent violent protests.
A police official, meanwhile, told Excelsior that barring stray incidents of stone-pelting the situation across the South Kashmir remained peaceful.
