SHOPIAN, Oct 4: South Kashmir’s Shopian town today observed a complete shutdown, followed by a sit-in after Friday prayers to demand the removal of the Gagren CRPF camp after killing of five persons by CRPF last month.
The shutdown was called by the local coordination committee comprising representatives of the local Traders’ Federation, Fruit Growers Association, Majlis-e-Mashawrat, Bar Association and other social, religious and business organizations of the district for removal of CRPF camp from Gagren village whose personnel were involved in killing of five persons last month and registration of FIR against the guilty CRPF personnel.
Shops, business establishments, educational institutions, banks and government offices remain closed in the town throughout the day, while as private vehicles were plying on the roads in the town.
The protesters threatened that if the camp was not removed by or before October 10, entire Gagren village will migrate en-mass.
Earlier the town resumed its normal life after remained under curfew from September 7 to 22 barring few hours of relaxation followed by an indefinite strike till September 29.
