Shutdown in parts of Srinagar

Srinagar, Jan 21: A complete shutdown was observed in many parts of the city, including commercial hub of Lal Chowk, to remember the people who were killed on this day in Srinagar’s Gawkadal area.
Shops, banks other business establishments remained closed in Lal Chowk, Maisuma, Gawkadal, Hari Singh High Street and Maharaja Bazar areas of Srinagar today in protest against the killings.
The shutdown was followed after the separatists had called for protests. Some sporadic violent protests took place in Maisuma area when dozens of young men pelted stones at police deployment near Budshah bridge. Police said no one was injured in this incident.
However, in other parts of the Valley life was normal as traffic lied smoothly on roads, and business establishments were open.
All the separatist including the pro-Pakistan Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Khan had called for today’s shutdown.
Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed to thwart any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, security was tightened in the city in view of the Republic Day celebration on January 26. Mobile CRPF and police bunkers were deployed around Bakshi Stadium, the venue of the Day.
