Shutdown, clashes in Old City

SRINAGAR, Aug 29: A shutdown amidst clashes was observed in parts of Old City against the nocturnal raids by police in wake of surfacing of a militant commander’s pictures and a Hizbul Mujahideen banner yesterday.
On Friday, masked youth displayed the pictures of Hizb divisional commander Burhan Muzzafar Wani and also a banner of the outfit was placed by unidentified persons on a compound wall of Jama Masjid.
Following these incidents, a massive manhunt to nab the culprits was launched by police and other security agencies. “The police conducted nocturnal raids at Nowhatta and its adjoining areas after identifying some of the youths allegedly involved in these incidents,” sources said, adding, that a total of 10 persons were detained.
As the police raids were underway, locals staged protests in Nowhatta and also clashed with security forces. Witnesses said the police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the protesters.
A spontaneous shutdown was observed in Nowhatta and its adjoining areas including Rajouri Kadal, Saraf Kadal, Gojwara and Kawdara against police raids. The locals staged protests and demanded release of detained persons.
In the noon, stone-throwing clashes between protesters and security men broke out at Rajouri Kadal and Kawdara during which several persons were injured.
At Kawdara, a youth identified as Sajad Ahmad was injured after a bullet fired by paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) hit his leg. He was immediately rushed to SKIMS Soura for treatment where his condition is stated to be stable.
