JAMMU, Apr 5: The activists of Dogra Front and Shiv Sena (AG) Jammu & Kashmir under the leadership of Ashok Gupta took out a cycle rally against the price hike of petrol and diesel here today.
“The price of petrol been hiked by Rs 2.19/liter and diesel by 98 paisa/ liter. The crude oil price in the international market is low but the Narendra Modi Govt, instead of reducing the price, is increasing the same,” Mr Gupta said.
“According to crude prices, the price of petrol and diesel should be around Rs 43 and Rs 37 a liter. It is an unjust act that the Central Government receives revenue for itself but forces the price hike on ordinary people.
“While there is no significant change in global oil prices, increasing the rates based on rupee-dollar value basis is not fair,” Mr Gupta said.
He stated that changes in the value of Indian rupee to that of US dollar was based on the demand for the American currency, besides fluctuation in stock market due to factors like outflows of foreign investment.
He further reiterated his opposition to continuation of the UPA-era price fixation policy of fuel products, where the rates were determined based on import prices of crude.
The State and the Central Government should reduce the VAT on the oil which will help in the reduction of the prices as it will benefit the common man.
The latest revision of fuel prices will result in a spurt in rates of essential commodities which would affect the poor people, Mr Gupta said while demanding that the revision be rolled back.
The party people present at the time of protest were Roshan, Fauji, Nanku, Parkash, Birbal, Abhishek and various others.
