SRINAGAR, Mar 21: In a setback to separatist camp ahead of by-polls as they’ve called for its boycott, Shabir Ahmad Shah has resigned from general secretary post of hardline Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
The development comes at a time when separatists are attempting to carry out poll boycott campaign in Valley by putting a united face. Shah, who joined Hurriyat hardline faction in November 2015 and is seen as strong proponent of unity among separatists, said he tendered his resignation “because I was not able to perform my duties as general secretary”.
He, however, said that he’ll continue to be part of hardline Hurriyat faction. Shah also heads his own Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) and formerly he was part of moderate and third faction of Hurriyat Conference. The Hurriyat headed by Geelani, meanwhile, has feigned ignorance about Shah’s resignation.
