Temps plummet due to fresh snowfall, rains

SRINAGAR, Nov 18: Srinagar-Leh National Highway remained closed for vehicular traffic today while traffic on historic Mughal road was suspended since Friday afternoon due to slippery conditions as snowfall in upper reaches and rains lashed Kashmir valley.
Due to fresh snowfall, particularly at Sonamarg, Zojila, Meenmarg and Drass, , traffic on the highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir, was suspended today. No vehicle was allowed from either side despite Border Roads Organization clearing the highway of snow yesterday but fresh snow accumulation led to the suspension of traffic.

The traffic on historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in South Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, also remained suspended since yesterday afternoon due to fresh snowfall and slippery road condition. The snowfall continued in the region for second day today.
The snowfall was reported in Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Tangmarg, Pahalgam and even Srinagar’s Zabarwan hills also experienced season’s first snowfall today.
The snowfall led to dip in the temperatures in Kashmir valley.
The night’s lowest temperature in Leh and Kargil towns was minus 6.4 degree Celsius and minus 6.0 degree Celsius respectively. “At minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, Leh town was the coldest in Jammu and Kashmir for the third consecutive day. Other places where the minimum temperatures fell below zero degrees in the State were Gulmarg minus 3.8 degree Celsius and Pahalgam minus 0.6 degree Celsius.
Srinagar city recorded a minimum of 2.9 degree Celsius and maximum of 7.6 degree Celsius which is 8 degree below normal. Qazigund recorded minimum of 4 degrees Celsius of and maximum of 8 degrees Celsius which is 7 notches below normal.
Gulmarg recorded minimum of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius and maximum of 6.6 degrees Celsius which is six notches below normal.
Pahalgam recorded minimum of 2.6 degrees Celsius and maximum of 6.4 degrees Celsius which is 9 notches below normal.
Kupwara recorded minimum of 2.6 degrees Celsius and maximum of 6.4 degrees Celsius which is 9 notches below normal.
Kokernag recorded minimum of 2.0 degrees Celsius and maximum of 7.1 degrees Celsius which is 6 notches below normal.
