Sir,
Refer news item ‘Panchayat members put up brave face, refuse to resign’ DE Nov 6.
Calling Hizbul chief Syed Sallah-ud-Din’s bluff, the sarpanchs in the State have reiterated that they will not resign in the wake of militant threats. The brave face put by the Sarpanchs will surely help in strengthening the Panchayati Raj movement in the State. There is no doubt, that many members lost their lives during and after elections to PRIs. Many are still under pressure to resign from their posts. But they are holding the fort bravely and deserve to be appreciated for this effort.
Now it is the responsibility of the Government to listen to the woes of Panchs and Sarpanchs who have been crying for their empowerment through 73rd amendment without powers these institutions will turn out to be mere white elephants, difficult to maintain. And the objectives to be achieved through them will remain unrealised. In case that happens, it will be a great blow to the democratic process at grass root level.
Besides, it becomes incumbent upon the Government to provide them security to let these institutions function efficiently.
Yours etc….
Iqbal Mir
