SRINAGAR, July 4: After yesterday’s militant attacks in South Kashmir, security in Srinagar has been put on high alert to avoid hit and run attacks in the summer capital.
Police conducted surprise cordon and search operations and frisking at 9 different places across Srinagar city, mainly at busy and sensitive places.
A top police official said that the surprise checks were conducted as pre-emptive measure to put pressure on the militants who may be eyeing on Srinagar to show their presence.
It may be mentioned here that the Director General of Police, K Rajendra, said here last week that militants are desperate to act in the main towns and Srinagar city. This, he said, is due to pressure on them from across the Line of Control (LoC) to act.
The 9 places where the searches were conducted today include Batamaloo bus stand, Lal Chowk, Amira Kadal, SK Park and Munawarabad Chowk.
Police cordoned off Batamaloo bus stand and conducted searches of vehicles and frisking of people for about half an hour. At Lal Chowk vehicle searches and frisking of people was conducted and at SK Park bikers were searched as part of anti-sabotage measure.
Police sources said here that the surprise checks and frisking will continue till further orders as there are inputs that militants may target Srinagar.
Police said that in South Kashmir areas like Tral, Shopian and Kulgam and North Kashmir Sopore town have sizable number of militant presence. Police have inputs that militants of these areas may conduct hit and run operations in Srinagar.
