Schools violate uniform calendar, promote students to next class

Srinagar, Dec 6: Some private schools in Kashmir have flagrantly violated the uniform calendar by holding exams in secret for multiple classes and promoting students to the next level.
Scores of parents complained that schools are misleading them by enabling the students to pass their final exams and move on to the next grade despite laws prohibiting the practice. “My daughter’s final test was conducted as usual, and she was promoted to LKG. However, when I notified the school administration of the government order, they paid no attention,” a parent said.
The parents expressed concern that their kids would be forced to pay for the mistakes of the schools and asked the administration to inspect the schools and punish offenders. “My child passed the exam with good grades, but I do not want him to suffer because of the school’s negligence. If anything is done to the school tomorrow, the education of our kids would be in jeopardy,” another parent said.
Pertinently, the School Education Department Kashmir has already issued a circular in this regard, stating it has come to the notice of the DSEK that some leading private schools in Srinagar City, Budgam, and Ganderbal districts have clandestinely issued date sheets for the conduct of examinations of various classes. “This is a very serious violation and contravention of rules, regulations, and guidelines issued from time to time and goes against the uniform academic calendar in Jammu and Kashmir,” the order said.
The parents also complained that some schools are also compelling students to attend school even though the government has declared a winter break due to the bitter cold. “There is a purpose behind the government’s declaration of a winter break. However, these schools are insisting that our kids show up without the uniform, leaving them exposed to the freezing weather,” another parent said.
Rouf Rehman, joint director of the Department of School Education, told Excelsior that all institutions will be inspected in March and that anyone found to be in violation of the law will face serious punishment.
