JAMMU, Apr 21: A large number of aggrieved depositors of the Jammu and Kashmir State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development (SCARD) Bank today staged a massive demonstration against the non-payment of their matured deposits, alleging prolonged delay and official apathy.
Over 300 financially distressed representatives, claiming to represent nearly one lakh affected individuals and around 20,000 depositors from different parts of the Union Territory, participated in the protest. The demonstrators accused the authorities of failing to disburse payments despite the deposits having matured over a year ago.

The protesters said that despite holding several meetings with concerned officials and organizing peaceful demonstrations, they have only received verbal assurances from the Government. They alleged that the authorities are yet to appoint a liquidator, a necessary step for initiating the repayment process, even after commitments made during recently held Assembly session.
Protesters claimed that at least ten depositors have died due to financial stress, while several families have been forced to cancel marriages and are struggling to meet educational and medical expenses.
During the agitation, the demonstrators appealed to the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir to intervene urgently and ensure the immediate release of their hard-earned savings in a time-bound manner.
