SC takes suo moto notice of Amarnath yatris’ deaths

JAMMU, July 15: The Supreme Court of India has take suo moto notice of a large number of deaths of the pilgrims during annual Amarnath pilgrimage this year and issued notices to the State Government and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) asking them to explain reasons for the deaths and steps taken to check them.
A division bench of the apex court comprising Mr Justice Swatantar Kumar and Dr Justice Balbir Singh Chouhan has  issued notices to the State Government and the SASB while suo moto taking cognizance of the deaths of large number of pilgrims this year asking them to respond to the notices by July 20.
Mr Justice Swatantar had recently visited holy cave shrine of Shri Amarnath ji and got feedback from the pilgrims. After his visit, the apex court took suo moto notice of the death.
During last 20 days of annual pilgrimage till yesterday, 82 deaths of the yatris had been reported.
Various organisations have already voiced concern over such a large number of deaths and lack of medicare facilities on both tracks of Pahalgam and Baltal besides the holy cave and the base camps.
