NEW DELHI, Sept 7: The Supreme Court today stayed criminal defamation cases against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy for commenting against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the micro blogging site ‘Twitter’.
Hearing the petition of Dr Swamy, the bench comprising Justice Deepak Mishra and Justice Prafulla Chand Pant stayed all the six criminal defamation cases. Dr Swamy argued that criminal defamation against him in this case was a violation of freedom of expression. The apex court granted a period of four weeks to the Central government to file the counter affidavit.
Dr Swamy has appealed to the court to repeal the six cases of criminal defamation which were filed against him for allegedly making comments against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. (UNI)
