SC issues notice to EC over non-implementation of its order

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Friday sought a detailed response from the Election Commission of India (ECI) on a petition filed by lawyer and BJP leader, Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, seeking initiation of contempt action against the ECI for not enforcing its order making it mandatory for candidates to publish in newspaper about pending cases against them after filing nomination paper in election.

It is a very important issue and has to be heard, said the bench headed by Justice SA Bobde and issued notice to the ECI and directed it to file a response within a week.

Upadhyay, in his petition, stated that the EC had allegedly failed to comply the Apex Court’s September 2018 order which made it clear to declare the criminal antecedents of political candidates. (AGENCIES)
