Saswata Chatterjee to play detective Shabar in new film

KOLKATA, July 8:  “Kahaani” fame actor Saswata Chatterjee is playing the role of Shabar Dasgupta, the fictional detective by novelist Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay, in upcoming film “Eagler Chokh”.
Saswata said he is very happy at being offered the role by director Arindam Sil.
About his character, the actor said he plays an unassuming undercover special branch police detective and shooting the film took him to places where he had never been – the dark underbelly of Kolkata.
“Despite living in Kolkata for ages, I visited places like the Khidderpore dock, some slums and rail yards for the first time,” the actor told PTI, adding that shooting in real life hot spots had been a trend ever since “Kahaani” happened.
Saswata, who has just completed the first part of shooting of Katrina Kaif-starrer “Jagga Jasoos” by Anurag Basu, said the film had already been shot in Morocco apart from Mumbai.
Asked to compare between shooting for a Hindi film and that for a Bengali film, Saswata said, “Here in Bengal the production has to work under more pressing schedules partly caused by monetary reasons as the shooting has to be wrapped up within a limited number of days to prevent cost overrun and hence there is not much scope to rethink and alter.
“In Mumbai, on the other hand, the shooting can be done in a more elaborate manner over a period of time,” he said.
The actor also played a key role in Anjan Dutta’s “Hemanta”, inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
“I think from ‘Hemanta’ to ‘Eagler Chokh’ and ‘Natoker Mato’ in between, there has been Shakespearean touch in Bengali films and that is because Bengalis are hooked to theatre,” he said. (PTI)
