Srinagar, June 8: Militants shot dead Sarpanch of a village affiliated with Indian National Congress (INC) in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district this afternoon.
A 35-year-old Sarpanch identified as Ajay Panditha son of Omkar Nath of Dooru was fired upon by the militants near Lok Bhawan Doru Larkipora this afternoon.
He was rushed to Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag where he was declared as brought dead.
Security forces reached the spot immediately and a massive operation was launched to nab the attackers.
Police have registered a case regarding the incident under relevant Sections of law. Investigation is in progress and police continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime.
Congress president, G A Mir said that Sarpanch was feeling unsafe for the last few months and had approached the police for security.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Jitendra Singh today condoled the killing of a Kashmiri Pandit Sarpanch in Jammu and Kashmir and said it is a “desperate attempt” by anti-national elements to defeat the process of grassroots democracy in the Union Territory.
Singh, Minister of State for Personnel and the Lok Sabha member from Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur constituency, expressed anguish over the Sarpanch’s killing.
“It is a desperate attempt by anti-national elements to defeat the process of grassroots democracy, which is sought to be established in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time at the instance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.
