Sarpanch killed, 3 militants trapped

Srinagar, Mar 11: Militants this evening shot dead a Sarpanch in Adoora area of Kulgam in South Kashmir.
This is the second killing of a Panchayat member in the last two days in Kashmir.
Militants fired upon Shabir Ahmad Mir son of Shabir Ahmad Mir at his native village of Adoora in Kulgam district.
The injured was shifted to district hospital Kulgam where he was declared as brought dead.
“He had bullet injuries in abdomen and was brought dead to the hospital,” Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Muzaffar said.
Police have registered a case while the area has been cordoned off.
On March 9, militants barged inside the house of a Sarpanch Sameer Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Rasheed Bhat and shot him dead at Khonmoh area on the outskirts of Srinagar.
In the meantime, a gun battle broke out between militants and security forces in Chewa Kalan area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama today.
Police said that a joint team of Police and Army launched a cordon and search operation in Chewa Kalan after inputs about presence of militants in the area.
Police said that as the joint team of security forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the security forces, triggering off a gun battle.
The exchange of firing between militants and security forces continued.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said that three militants including a Pakistani national are trapped.
