JAMMU, June 26: Samooh Theatre celebrated its foundation day and its founder Dr. Sudhir Mahajan’s birthday with the performance of Dogri translation of Sophocles’s Greek play Antigone at K.L Saigal Hall, here today.
Balwant Thakur, Regional Director ICCR was the chief guest on the occasion, who appreciated the efforts of the young actors of Samooh Theatre and congratulated the Director, Ravinder Sharma for creativity and imagination.
Mr Thakur said that it is easy to make things complicated, but it is very difficult to make things easy.
The play Antigone is about the two brothers leading opposite sides in Thebes’ civil war died fighting each other for the throne. Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, has decided that Eteocles will be honored and Polyneices will be in public shame. The rebel brother’s body will not be sanctified by holy rites, and will lie unburied on the battlefield, prey for carrion animals like worms and vultures, the harshest punishment at the time. Antigone and Ismene are the sisters of the dead Polyneices and Eteocles.
The play was designed and directed by Ravinder Sharma and translated by Dr. Sudhir Mahajan while music was designed by Suriender Manhas and Rohit Bains did the choreography of the play. Shivani Anand wrote the starting poetry to make bridge between previous two plays and this one.
The prominent artists who made the stage vibrant by playing the various characters in the play included Kanika Sharma as Antigone, Preeti Sharma as Ismene, Pankaj Sharma as Creon, Nirja Sharma as Eurydice, Abhishake Bhatt as Sentry while Dooth by Munish Malhotra and Rajat Gupta, Rohit Chib, Ajay Tamang, Goutam Sharma and Abhisheak Bhatt gave scintillating performance in the chorus.
Lights were artistically designed by Avinash Lakhnotra, Make-Up by Shami Dhamir and Costumes by Kumar A Bharti and Stage Management by Neha Sharma. The play was witnessed by the artists, Theatre activists, writers and the members of the civil society.
Prominent among others who witnessed the play were Vikram Sharma, Surinder Manhas, Subhash Anand, Shammi Dhamir, Abhishek Bharti and Aditya Bharti.
