BILLAWAR, Feb 15: A rare wild life species, Sambhar stag, which is also at the verge of extinction in the region, was shot dead by hunters in Dangara village in tehsil Billawar of district Kathua today.
The animal with wider bullet injury on its body was found lying dead in a farm of State Agriculture Department near Dangara (Dingi Simbli) during the day. A large number of people gathered at the spot and informed officials of the State Wildlife Department. The police also came to know about the incident.
A team from Wildlife Department led by Range Officer Dewan Chgand reached the spot. The Veterinary doctor conducted the postmortem and the body was disposed off. Wildlife department has registered a case in this connection. It was suspected that some poachers fired at the animal and it ran and hid in the farm and ultimately died. The locals have demanded protection of this banned rare wildlife species in the area. The investigation has been started in this regard.
