Sale, purchase of accessories for vehicle modification banned in Jammu

JAMMU, Aug 4: District Magistrate Jammu has ordered prohibition on sale and purchase of accessories used for unauthorized vehicle modification in district Jammu.
The order has triggered panic among dealers and manufacturers of the accessories, who fear possible harassment by the law enforcing agencies without any fault on their end.
According to the order in this regard, the sale purchase, storage, distribution and display for sale of all motor vehicle accessories, which are intended or likely to be used for unauthorized modification in violation of Section 52 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, is prohibited within the territorial jurisdiction of District Jammu, with immediate effect.
While elaborating, the orders says that such accessories include oversized tyres, pressure horns, metallic bumpers, high-intensity halogen lights, tinted or reflective window films, roof rail spoilers, modified exhausts and similar fittings, which alter the original manufacturer specifications of the vehicle and compromise the road worthiness, thereby posing a serious threat to the safety of the passengers and pedestrians
The Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic Jammu shall ensure effective enforcement of this order in coordination with concerned field officers.
Further, a joint committee comprising of Tehsildar concerned, SHO concerned, DTI concerned and representative(s) from the RTO shall carry out periodic inspections within their respective jurisdictions to ensure strict compliance with this order and submit fortnightly reports to the Office of the District Magistrate.
“Any person, firm or establishment found violating this order shall be liable for penal action under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the said materials shall be liable to seizure,” reads the order.
Meanwhile, the ordered has triggered panic among the dealers and manufacturers of the accessories, who said that instead of taking action against those involved in unauthorized modification of the vehicles, the authorities were targeting the business community and their business.
