SRINAGAR, June 17: General secretary of National Conference Ali Mohammad Sagar was today released a day after High Court quashed his detention order and had directed his release from jail.
Sagar was arrested in August last year as Central Government abrogated Article 370 of Indian Constitution and bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
He was booked under Public Safety Act on February 5 this year by the District Magistrate Srinagar soon after his preventive custody ended.
Court said the order of detention is illegal because the Detaining Authority has not shown its awareness to the fact that Sagar was already in custody in view of the law laid down by Supreme Court.
The detention order was, however, passed on February 5 this by the detaining authority with a view to prevent him from acting in any manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order.
Earlier on June 3, authorities released former bureaucrat turned politician Shah Faisal and two senior People’s Democratic Party leaders Sartaj Madani and Peer Mansoor, after Government revoked their detention order under PSA.
After the release of Sagar now three mainstream political leaders are still detained under the PSA. They include former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and PDP leader Nayeem Akhtar and NC leader and son of MP Mohammad Akbar Lone.
Mehbooba is under detention since August 5. Authorities had extended the PSA of Sagar and PDP leaders Sartaj Madni and Nayeem Akhtar. However, Sagar and Madni are now out.
Mehbooba was last month shifted to her official residence at Gupkar in Srinagar. She was shifted to Gupkar residence after a separate order declared it as Subsidiary Jail.
