Srinagar, Oct 16: In the wake of destruction caused by the last month’s deluge to their area, residents in Pampore have demanded an immediate comprehensive plan to save the area from further inundation by the river Jehlum.
“Since the Saffron town has become a flood prone area, the Government should immediately prepare a comprehensive plan to construct concrete bund throughout the river length that encompasses the town from Gallander to Frestbal area,” said a civil society group in the town.
The group said that town also lacks proper drainage system due to which the receding floodwaters did not exit from the town for two week.
“A proper drainage system be constructed, new dewatering stations be built and the existing ones which have been made nonfunctional due to the concerned departments negligence be made properly functional,” it said.
It said the electric receiving station should be shifted to a higher place so that it is not affected by the floods in future. “The existing station is located at Tanchabagh which is at the base level of the river Jehlum and remains inundated throughout the year.”
The power supply to PHE lift and storage station be supplied directly from the grid station to ensure continuous water supply to the town.
The group has appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his intervention to save the town form further inundation and destruction.
