Rural, remote areas deserve attention of Delimitation Commission: Harsh

UDHAMPUR, July 3: Referring to the upcoming visit of Delimitation Commission to J&K for creation of new Assembly constituencies and re-adjustment of territorial boundaries of existing constituencies, Chairman-JKNPP and former Minister Harsh Dev Singh said that the rural, remote and other areas with tough terrain and rugged topography deserved focussed attention of the concerned authorities.
He said that several far-flung areas had suffered immensely due to their neglect, lack of proper representation and inaccessibility and hence continued to remain deprived of the fruits of development. He was addressing public meetings in villages Ritti, Bassan and Sunal falling in Chenani and Udhampur constituencies.
Seeking a separate Assembly constituency for Pancheri, Lander Bhomag, Mr. Singh opined that the said belt had continued to suffer neglect and deprivation for the last several decades due to its remoteness and acute lack of communication facilities. He said that it was not only deserving but also entitled in terms of the criteria as laid down under the norms and prescribed procedures governing delimitation.
He elucidated that Sec 60 of J&K Re-organization Act has categorically provided that apart from population, the other significant factors including “physical features, existing boundaries of administrative units, facilities of communication and convenience of public” shall form the basis for fresh delimitation of constituencies.
Prominent among those who spoke on the occasion included Manju Singh, Rampaul Bhagat, Subash Chander Sharma and others.
