Road Safety Week

Sir,
The 26th Road Safety Week  was celebrated across the State of Jammu & Kashmir from January 11 to January 17 to creare awareness in the drivers, passangers and general public about the need to observe traffic rules while driving and travelling both by road or on foot and thus observe road safety. It is unfortunate that a large number of people lose their lives in road accidents and many more are injured with some of them being rendered physically disabled for the rest of their life. Most of the area of our state, being hilly and mountainous, road accidents, especially on the Jammu & Kashmir National Highway, particularly in Ramban- Banihal area, occur quite often claiming a heavy toll of precious lives. As such, it is imperative that the condition of roads is improved by carrying out periodic macdamisation.
Moreover accident prone sites on the roads need to be identified and strong parspets constructed to prevent accidents. Licences need to be issued after rigorous tests and orientation courses should be organised for the drivers quite often sensitising them about the need to observe traffic rules, traffic signals and their responsibilites. The provisions of Motor Vehicle Act need to be implemented strictly and violators of the Act indulging themselves in traffic violations such as drunken driving, rash/reckless driving, overcrowding, driving without Driving licence, driving without wearing crash helmets on two wheelers or seat belts in four wheelers, overspeeding etc. need to be heavily fined. We need to keep in mind that life is a beautiful gift from God and it is our first and foremost duty to preserve this precious gift. The Traffic Police,Transport Department and law enforcing agencies need to work in tandem to ensure that drivers and commuters observe the basic principles of road safety so that precious lives are not lost in the accidents.Road safety should become a way of life and traffic rules need to be observed for the sake of our ownselves and also for our loved ones
Yours etc….
