Sir,
Road transport in Jammu like other parts of the country has become popular means for passengers and goods movement. Travel by road provides a lot of convenience, flexibility, speed and reliability particularly of short distances in cities and towns. That is why it is preferred medium of transport. But the conveniences provided to us have proved otherwise for our selfish ends. Often times when we glean through the news papers in the morning we feel dejected and a sense of insecurity tremors us to read the narration of tragic road accidents. In a civic society where wisdom prevails and conscience dominates there are no or little chances of accidents except mechanically failures. But what could have been attributed to technical snag the blame lies on un-mindful driving and post haste of passengers. Overloading of passengers and goods is very common feature which has become the prime factors of accidents and unwarranted deaths. City and rural vehicle drivers are the worst offenders in this regard. In towns and villages, people can be seen sitting on the roof tops of the buses.A full family of wife and husband with 2-3 children riding a two wheeler is not un-common scene found plying on roads. This is blatant disregard of the rules of safety. Vehicles that are old, rickety and unworthy of use must not be operated. Besides, there appears to be no coordination and cooperation between various agencies and authorities with control and regulation of road traffic norms.
To prevent the frequency of accidents, it is imperative that effective long and short term measures are taken. Road safety be made compulsory school subject. Radar guns be used to check speed of vehicles.Over and above training classes for drivers be initiated to aware them of road signals and road safety. Penalty be imposed for not wearing crash helmets for both driver and pillion riders.
Yours etc…
