JALANDHAR, Sept 7: The troops from Rising Star Corps have launched major flood relief operations in Jammu division area of Jammu and Kashmir, facing one of the worst floods in its history, since Friday. The troops, who were on high alert from the beginning of heavy rains since four days ago, swung into action once it was clear that water is likely to breach the safety levels in almost all the rivers and drains in the area. They are involved in major rescue operations from almost last 72 hours to lend a helping hand to civil administration, specially in areas where it was unable to reach out in time.
Waters flowing through Chenab, Tawi, Ravi rivers and their various tributaries have created havoc in areas, specially close to the international border marooning large number of villagers and BSF personnel. Army troops are working tirelessly to rescue people trapped in flooded villages, isolated houses and multi-storied buildings.
In Pargwal Area near Akhnoor, over 3000 civilians have been evacuated to safer areas from raging waters of Chenab river. Most affected villages in this area are Gawar, Sajwal, Sarwal, Channi Sarwa and Borai Channi. Temporary relief camps have been established at Pargwal, Rajpura and Ghagriyal to provide succour to the displaced people.
A major relief operation is also underway in areas adjoining Nikki and Wadi Tawi Rivers West of Jammu City and over 800 civilians have been evacuated to safer areas in coordination with civil administration. This included evacuation of 74 persons under very adverse conditions from small islands created by these rivers.
Temporary relief camps have also been established at Nai Basti, Sohanjana and Haji Naka.
Operations are being assisted by two ALH helicopters of Army Aviation along with one MI-17 helicopter from Indian Air Force.
A large number of columns and medical teams have been launched by the Army in affected areas. All displaced villagers are being provided temporary accommodation, food and medical care.
Western Command GOC-in-C Lt Gen K J Singh has directed the local Commanders to ensure full support to the civil administration and BSF and ensure round the clock monitoring.
He has also given orders for medical teams and other resources including Engineers to be on stand-by for the Kashmir Valley.
