Rising Selfie Addiction

Sir,
These days mobile phones are considered as the “Heart and Soul” for all the youths. Our day begins and ends with the smart phones as it is the first thing we see in the morning and the last thing which we see at the night. Cell phones have become an integral part of our lives in this era of globalization and digitalization. But its overuse and misuse has posed serious health ramifications in the form of headaches, fatigue, insomnia, heart ailments, and many other serious health related issues. Modern age is the age of social media and everyone loves to get public attention by posting self pictures on the social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, Watsapp etc. Taking selfies have become a new and emerging form of addiction like alcohol/drug addiction and this sort of devil craze has really enveloped the average youths of India. With the rapid pace of digital evolution, selfie craze has moved on to a next dangerous level and has become an obsession now to post self portrait pictures on the social media. As per some reports, India tops the list of selfie deaths which is a very disturbing and distressing phenomenon. To get more social media attention, people capture selfies at dangerous places and with furious animals. It has already led to heavy injuries and even deaths of those attempting to take an ultimate selfie. The selfie craze doesn’t seem to be dying anytime soon but a lot of people are dying because of it. It is high time that the Government, NGOs, Schools, colleges, universities, electronic and print media etc comes forward and takes some firm initiatives in the form of conducting seminars, workshops, debates, awareness programs etc in this perspective which will make people aware of this new form of addiction.
