Jammu City, once considered one of the more peaceful urban centers in northern India, is witnessing a disturbing rise in street crimes. Incidents of mobile thefts, chain snatching, and petty robberies are becoming increasingly common, raising serious concerns among residents and local authorities.
Alarming Trends
Over the past few months, the city has seen a noticeable spike in mobile phone thefts, especially in crowded areas like Talab Tillo, Bantalab, Durga Nagar, Bus Stand etc. In one recent incident near Jewel Chowk, a college student had her phone snatched while walking home in the evening. Similarly, there have been multiple reports of chain snatching from women in Gandhi Nagar and Shastri Nagar areas, often carried out by thieves on motorcycles who flee before anyone can react.
Possible Causes
Several factors contribute to the rising crime rate in Jammu:
1. Unemployment and Economic Pressure: With limited job opportunities, especially for youth, many are turning to crime for easy money.
2. Inadequate Policing: The city’s expanding population has not been matched by a proportional increase in police force or surveillance, making it easier for criminals to operate.
3. Lack of Street Lighting and CCTV: Poor infrastructure in several parts of the city makes it easier for culprits to escape unnoticed.
4. Drug Abuse: Increasing substance abuse among youth is also linked to a rise in criminal activities, as addicts often resort to theft to fund their habits.
Staying Safe
While the police are stepping up patrols and installing more surveillance systems, residents must also take precautions:
• Be Aware of Surroundings: Avoid using phones while walking in isolated or crowded areas.
• Avoid Wearing Costly Jewelry Openly: Especially in market areas or during late hours.
• Travel in Groups: When possible, especially during evenings or in low-lit areas.
• Report Suspicious Activity: Quick reporting can help authorities take timely action.
• Use Anti-Theft Apps: Install tracking apps like “Find My Device” or “Find My iPhone” to trace lost phones.
The rise in crime in Jammu City is a worrying trend that requires immediate attention. While law enforcement agencies must enhance their efforts, community awareness and individual vigilance are equally important to curb this menace. A safer Jammu can only be achieved through cooperation between the public and the police.
