Sir,
There has been a demand from many quarters for revoking of Armed Forces Special Power Act in Jammu and Kashmir mainly on the ground that security situation has shown improvement in the Valley. Whether this demand is politically motivated more than it is for genuine reasons, is not hard to find out. In the recently held internal security meet at New Delhi, the CM raised the issue saying,” let us not wait for the last gun falling silent…” The main opposition party in the State too has been clamoring for its rescinding not even its gradual withdrawal. Perhaps the recent incidents where militants have been engaging security forces for hours together, grenade attacks, attacks on security forces, building new militant hideouts recovering of arms and ammunition intermittently go all against revoking of the said act. We should not forget that the gains made by the security forces are likely to be wasted if a total withdrawal is decided. Let it be seen that how gradual and in stages this Act is eased from those areas where no incident of any nature for a reasonable period is noticed. Political considerations can wait but not the security scenario compromised at any cost.
Yours etc…..
