Addressing a press conference alongside other members of the Association, Chairman Haji Mohammad Bilal Dar said that Lal Chowk has lost its traditional identity.
“It used to be a thriving commercial hub, but since the implementation of the Srinagar Smart City Project, business activity has significantly declined. While certain sectors like hospitality and Kashmiri arts have witnessed growth, the overall business outlook of Lal Chowk has weakened,” Dar said.
He noted that the city center no longer attracts shoppers as it once did.
“Lal Chowk has been transformed into a tourist spot, similar to other attractions in Kashmir. This shift has adversely affected businesses in the area,” he added.
Dar also highlighted that the backbone of Lal Chowk was its vibrant trade, which, he noted, is no longer the case.
He cited the cessation of passenger bus services through Lal Chowk as a major factor contributing to the decline in business. “We want customers to come to Lal Chowk for shopping, and for that, the Government must take necessary steps. Lal Chowk is not meant to be a place for photoshoots or selfies; it’s a commercial center,” he emphasized.
Dar alleged that there is a “conspiracy” to undermine the city center, which he said used to be the top shopping destination for locals. “Now, people come here only out of compulsion,” he remarked.
The President urged the Government to focus on reviving the historic glory and legacy of Lal Chowk to help traders sustain their livelihoods.
“I won’t say business here has ended, but it has certainly weakened and needs immediate attention from the Government,” he said.
The traders also appreciated the efforts to restore the historic Old Court Complex for public use. They requested the restoration of commercial traffic through the Clock Tower at Lal Chowk, stating, “The current traffic restrictions have had a detrimental effect on business operations.”
