JAMMU, Mar 28: The residents of Gharota held protest to seek arrest of the accused involved in attacking an ex-sarpanch and one another with sharp edged weapon.
Large number of people hailing from different areas assembled at Main Chowk Gharota and held protest.
After blocking the vehicular movement, hundreds of protesters raised slogans and demanded immediate arrest of the accused, who attacked two persons including ex-sarpanch namely Narinder Singh, son of late Vakil Singh, resident of Ward No 3, Gharota and Goutam (45), son of Om Dutt, resident of Ward No 5, Gharota with sharp edged weapon few days back owing to old enmity.
In the attack, Narinder Singh received serious injuries while Goutam also sustained some injuries. Both the injured were immediately rushed to Government Primary Health Centre, Bhalwal, from where they were referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Jammu.
Later, the family members of Narinder took him to a private hospital in Amritsar for specialized treatment.
The protesters said that the police is not performing its job with dedication as a result the accused are still at large.
They alleged that Kranti Sharma, Ashok Kumar and his wife, Rakesh Sharma, Ravi Sharma and SI in Police Department Neelam Kumari are involved in the attack and police should arrest them immediately so that justice prevails.
After getting information, police team led by DySP Akhnoor Gurvinder Pal Singh, SHO Gharota SI Sachinder Singh rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the protesters. SDM Bhalwal also reached the spot.
SDM and police officials assured the protesters that the accused will be behind the bars soon.
On the assurance, the protestors dispersed and vehicular movement was restored.
When contacted, SDPO Akhnoor Gurvinder Pal Singh told the EXCELSIOR that a case under Section 307 RPC stands registered against the accused with Police Station Gharota and several persons have been detained for questioning. However, no formal arrest has been made, he added.
“First there was only one accused in the complaint, but the protestors also alleged the names of some more people in the incident. We are conducting investigation and the accused will be arrested as soon as possible”, SDPO stated.
