SRINAGAR, Mar 10: Residents of Haripora Baila village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district are grappling with a severe safety hazard caused by electric wires precariously tangled around wooden poles and trees.

Locals say that the absence of proper electric poles has forced them to drape wires over tree branches, rooftops, and makeshift poles, creating a dangerous environment. “We are particularly worried about our children, as the wires hang at a dangerously low height, which could lead to a mishap,” one resident said.
They said the Power Development Department (PDD) installed a transformer but failed to provide electric poles, leaving them to tie the wires to trees. “This has put the entire area at risk,” a resident said.
Last year, a short circuit resulted in an electric shock to a woman, raising further concerns about the village’s safety.
Despite repeated complaints to the PDD, no action has been taken. “We have approached all relevant departments, including our MLA, but nothing has been done,” a local said.
Electricity was introduced to the village in 2014, but residents say infrastructure remains inadequate. “We pay our bills regularly, yet we do not have proper poles or a reliable power supply,” another resident said.
Residents fear an inevitable disaster, warning that the old wires could snap at any moment.
