JAMMU, Nov 23: Growing problem of traffic congestion, lack of parking facilities, modernization of General Bus Stand by creating multi-storey parking space besides expansion of Jammu Airport are the major issues which need immediate attention of the Government.
While reacting to the recent meeting convened by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and attended by all the Cabinet Ministers regarding development issues of Jammu, president Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jammu Y V Sharma today said that Government should implement all these decisions taken in the meeting and expedite work on the developmental projects launched in and around Jammu. He said that work on flyover project at Bikram Chowk be expedited and pending work on BC Road- Rehari Chungi and Canal Road flyovers should be taken in hand without any delay.
CCI president further said that Government seems to be non-serious over the growing problem of traffic congestion in the city. There is no space left on the roads and lanes and there is no planning for creating sufficient parking lots. He said BC Road has been turned into permanent bus stand of all the routes including Tempo Travellers/ Tata Sumos and Video Coach Buses, Traffic cops are hardly seen regulating traffic at busy chowks. Traffic jams in the city has turned life of the people miserable. Project regarding modernization of Jammu Bus Stand and creation of multi-tier parking has been kept in the limbo. There was urgent need to bring improvement in Raghunath Bazar and adjoining areas, upgradation of Jammu Airport, and early construction of Bikram Chowk besides initiating work on remaining flyovers at B C Road-Rehari and Jewel Chowk-Canal Road and extending them to New Plot-Janipur and Talab Tilloo.
Mr Sharma said due to traffic congestion it is very unsafe for the people to walk in the lanes, city markets and on roads. One can see vehicles parked anywhere throughout the city and there is no agency to take cognizance. He also demanded that work on the projects regarding beautification of Jammu including artificial lake, rope way trolley at Mubarak Mandi-Bahu Fort be taken up at war footing. He demanded Jammu should be provided International Airport with all the modern and world class facilities.
