JAMMU, Mar 9: Jammu Kashmir Vichar Manch has strongly protested the deliberate attempt of the election staff of the Relief Organization to scuttle the registration of the voters on the special day designated for the registration of voters on the national level.
The Manch in its meeting here today which was attended among others by Dr R L Bhat, Ashok Kangan, H L Bhat, Pran Pandita, described how the registration was thwarted and voters were refused registration.
“Though the Relief Commissioner in repeated notifications in the press through the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (Migrant) had specified BLO’s and the location for the registration of the voters on the last day March 9, 2014, the staff put unnecessary impediments in the process of registration. Thousands of people who had come to Shankar building, Akhnoor Road, Jammu, to register their votes as per the notification they were refused registration and asked to get their applications (Form 6) attested by Tehsildars/Zonal officers’’ Manch in a handout later said.
It said the notification did not say anything about this attestation by Tehsildar/Zonal Officer. As a matter of fact no such attestation is needed anywhere in the rest of the country for registration. As per the rules the voter has to be identified by another voter of the constituency and has to present proof of age etc. no attestation of the Tehsildar /Zonal Officer is needed.
The JKVM has sought immediate intervention of Election Commission in the matter.
