RAJOURI, Aug 22: The indefinite strike launched by the students of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) was today called off after two weeks, as the Registrar of the Varsity was today removed from his post and attached with the Vice Chancellor and the District police authorities agreed to remove the head of the Special Investigating Team (SIT) this evening.
Officials sources said that with the intervention of Chief Minister, who is also Chancellor of the BGSBU the Vice Chancellor, Prof IA Hamal today removed the Registrar, Mohd Rashid Choudhary from the post and attached in his office as OSD. Mohd Ishaq, Controller Examination of the Varsity has been placed as new Registrar of the University till further orders.
The second major demand of the students regarding change of the members of the SIT was also partially accepted and the SSP Rajouri Dr Haseeb Mughal principally agreed to remove head of the SIT as students were expressing their apprehensions in the fair investigations as he also belonged to a particular community.
With the continuous efforts and marathon meetings held by SSP Rajouri for the last four days, the deadlock came to an end. While the students continued their protest in the University today on the 14th consecutive day after boycotting class, the SSP invited students for dialogue to his office chamber at Rajouri. At around 5 pm, the talks were resumed. The SSP also talked to the top officials in the Government over the issue and with the intervention from CM’s office their demand with regard to the removal of Registrar, was accepted and the VC also issued order this evening.
On the second demand of the changing members of the SIT, the talks continued for over an hour and it was later agreed by the SSP after consultation with higher authorities to change some members of the SIT. But the students had expressed their apprehensions about SIT head, SDPO Thannamandi DySP Inftkhar Talib and a Sub Inspector Mohd Sharief. The formal order in this regard are yet to be issued most likely on Monday. Regarding complete audit of the University funds since 2009, the students have appealed the Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed and Minister for Higher Education Naeem Akhtar to do the needful.
After this decision the students were in jubilations and also celebrated the occasion by beating drums and dancing in the town this evening. Local civil society members who have also launched struggle to expose corruption and mal-practice in Varsity also joined the celebrations.
SSP Rajouri, Dr Mughal when contacted with these two decisions, the students declared to call off their strike and they will resume their studies from Monday. He said that with the intervention from the higher authorities in the Government, the VC attached the Registrar to his office and new man has been appointed at his place. He said that a few SIT members are also being changed and an official order in this regards will be issued on Monday.
