Recognition of third Sex

Sir,
The decision of the Supreme Court of India to recognise transgender as a third gender community is laudable. The decision will have far reaching consequences on their lives. It will enable them live a dignified and meaningful life.
Since they are not legally recognised they are ostracised, discriminated against, abused and often forced into prostitution. The recognition would entitle them to right to record their gender identity in documents like the election card, passport, driving license and ration card but also hopefully open may doors for them. It is now for the Government to implement the Supreme Court directive at the earliest so that this section too becomes a part of society.
The NGOs and other organisations working for their upliftment have a long way to go before they succeed fully in their objectives. The first step in this direction has been taken successfully.
Yours etc…
Amit Mahajan
