There are many nullahs running in Jammu city and its vicinity which carry rain water during the rainy season and disgorge in Tawi River. In view of this, the Government decided channeling of the nullahs meaning linking these up and making one common outflow passage for the nullahs. It means that one nullah is to be selected as the main carrying channel and the rest of the nullahs would but linked to it and their water flowed to the main. In this process, vast patches of land have become available. This land belongs either to the Jammu Development Authority or to the Jammu Housing Board. Nobody can stake claim for the reclaimed land. This not withstanding, many greedy persons have grabbed some land and illegally raised structures on it. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the J&K Economic Reconstruction Agency, which has undertaken the channelizing of the nullahs, had written to the Divisional Commissioner that attempts are made by vested interests to grab the reclaimed land. He had asked for taking necessary steps to stop grabbing of land by unauthorized persons. It was in this background that the Divisional Commissioner Jammu Division had to take preemptive steps to thwart illegal encroachment.
It is very appropriate for the Government to have constituted several committees to conduct survey of the reclaimed land by channelizing three big nullahs in particular, and to see that illegal encroachment or seizure of the reclaimed land is vacated. Not only that, the Divisional Commissioner has directed the SSP Jammu to ensure that the work of demolition of unauthorized and illegal construction raised on reclaimed land is not obstructed. Severe action under law will be taken against those defying the ban imposed by the Government. The firm action taken by the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu is highly appreciated by the people. The idea of utilizing the reclaimed land for parks and recreational sites is welcome. Jammu is already short of parks and parking lots. Reclaimed land is the ideal for such utilization. We expect the committees constituted with membership from the JDA, Housing Board, Revenue Department, Forest Department and others will be fully sensitized to their responsibility of contributing to the ecology and beauty of the city of Jammu.
