JAMMU, Apr 4: ICCR Jammu’s presentation of the traditional performing arts of the hills of Reasi came in for much of the appreciation in Reasi Cultural Festival organised by District administration Reasi with the support of Salal Power Station, Jyotripum.
Earlier the Regional Director of Indian Council for Cultural Relations, J&K Balwant Thakur, gave a detailed overview of the activities of ICCR in J&K and underlined the need for the promotion of rarest traditional artistic expressions.
The mega Reasi Cultural Festival opened with three rarest ethnic cultural legacies of the hills of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine and mesmerised the gathering with their magical presentations. The opening item ‘Masade’ was followed by the presentation of ‘Bhaakh’.
The ethnic series of the Reasi Cultural Festival concluded with the vibrant Kud dance presentation. ‘Kud’ is one of the most popular dance form of the hills of Reasi District. Primarily performed by men-folk this ritualistic dance is performed to please the local deities. People have a belief that during village celebrations and rituals which are organized in the honor of local deities whole men-folk perform ‘Kud’ and missing the same may annoy the local deity which no one can afford to do. For centuries this wonderful tradition of dance survived in the same fashion and later it begin to be performed in other festivities like marriages, child birth, crop cutting etc.
All the artists received standing ovation of the audience.
