REASI, May 22: To enforce the Government order, the municipalities of district Reasi are ready with few biodegradable options to be given to public once the ban is implemented in stricter terms from next month.
Instead of one-time-use plastic being blatantly used in Katra and Reasi municipal limits, district administration Reasi, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner, Indu Kanwal Chib, conducted an interaction between the bio-degradable utensil suppliers and the Self Help Groups under JKSRLM UMEED wherein the machine makers made the SHG women understand the budgeting and working of the machines which shall help them to manufacture utensils from local forest produce.
This will not only empower these SHGs but also free these two important towns of district Reasi from generation of waste from one-time-use plastic. This is one of the main ingredients of the waste so collected and dumped on the dumping site which has been growing each day in huge magnitude; and has become a cause of grave concern for the neighbouring villages of the dumping site.
Women from various self-help groups from Katra, Reasi, Bhomag, Arnas and Pouni blocks participated in the workshop and were given information about manufacturing of disposable utensils from leaves which are bio-degradable and environment friendly. They were also informed about the health hazards of plastic-made disposable utensils.
The programme was conducted by the Coordinating Officer, Aijaz Ahmed and other professional resource persons from JKSRLM also attended the same.
