JAMMU, June 26: Samooh Theatre organised play EPILOGUE today, which is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s one-act play The Swan Song, is a character depiction of an ageing artist. This play is adapted and directed by Ravinder Sharma.
This play is a commentary on noble lifestyle, romantic disillusionment, and fears of a isolated old age and awaiting death. The performer, Prithvi Raj, is alone in the theatre where he has performed a play that evening.
He discovers that his noble background inculcate a strong admiration for the arts in him. However, as he pursued his love, he became alienated from society. Though he was lauded and applauded on stage, society did not accept him into their homes. Disillusioned by these false standards, he turned to alcohol and began acting in plays as idiots and clowns, endangering his health and career. He found himself in his 60year, wasted, alone, and horrified. He found comfort in portraying his best roles for an audience that did not exist.
It is Prithvi Raj’s final performance, a 60 years old stage veteran finds himself confronted with an empty auditorium following a performance, and the silence and emptiness cause him to reflect on his life and how he got to be here. He is reminded of his noble origins, great military history, and following willpower to use his historic abilities. He reflects on his achievement and celebrity as an actor. He becomes disillusioned by his romantic failure and gradually degenerates. He shuns leading roles in favour of those of a fool or clown in plays. He now finds himself elderly, alone, and afraid of the impending death. He senses a lack of warmth from family and friends, and most importantly, a lack of a home. His farewell performance became a remembrance of his greatest performances.
Ravinder Shrama played the character of Prithvi Raj while Sandeep Manhas played the character of Sandy. The lights were designed by Ajay Tamangh and music by Radhika Sharma.Jahanvi Sharma, Kamani Sharma and Deepika managed backstage work.Avinash Lakhnotra anchored the proceedings very smoothly.
