JAMMU, May 14: A scarless and stichless surgery for cancer of rectum was performed at Government Medical College Jammu by Prof S L Kachroo and Dr Vikrant Chandail, which has never been performed earlier at Jammu.
This surgery was unique combination of endoscopic and laparoscopic procedure. There was incision on the abdomen of the patient, who was a 70 years old lady and discharged on the second postoperative day.
Earlier, these cancers were treated for removal of rectum and possibly anal canal also and patient had to pass stools in a bag which is applied onto the abdomen of patient permanently or temporarily. By making such a successful attempt the State of Jammu and Kashmir can be included in the list of very few gastro-centres of India where this surgery is performed.
Prof S L Kachroo is heading a unit in the Department of General Surgery in GMC Jammu whereas Dr Vikrant Singh Chandail is the first qualified Surgical Gastroenterolist working in the Department of General Surgery at GMC Jammu.
When contacted Dr Vikrant said he is well versed with latest technology available and is waiting for a Government nod to start a Gastro-surgery Department in Superspeciality Hospital along with the recently started Medical Gastroenterology.
Dr Vikrant has the experience of working as Assistant Professor in Superspeciality of GI Surgery at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre. He said once his department is made functional at Superspeciality Hospital he can deliver his best to help poor patients of the State who have to be referred to higher centres due to non-availability of Department of Surgical Gastroenterology.
